On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
