Based on data released by Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinian individuals have perished while detained starting from October 2023. A rights monitoring body based in Israel has indicated that the actual figure is almost certainly significantly higher, due to hundreds of unaccounted for people originating in Gaza.

Updated Statistics

Israeli defense forces finalized information on detention fatalities for May 2024, and the prison service in September 2024. Researchers discovered another 35 casualties in detention subsequent to these dates and confirmed them with official sources.

Although the total number of fatalities recorded being substantially larger than previous assessments, it probably does not reflect the full scale of Palestinian casualties, as stated by the director of the prisoner monitoring division.

“Even though we are providing evidence for a larger total of casualties than previously reported, this is an incomplete account,” he explained. “We are confident that there are still people who lost their lives in custody that we are unaware of.”

Civilian Deaths

Classified government records shows that the majority of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who lost their lives in detention were civilians, based on a simultaneous examination.

Prominent Examples

Certain fatalities in confinement have been high profile, such as a senior hospital director who perished in prison after 120 days in confinement.

A detainee detained alongside the victim testified that he was led to the courtyard by prison staff immediately preceding his passing, visibly injured and naked from the waist down. His remains has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Other prisoners who perished in detention in Israel are unidentified. Correctional authorities and defense forces gave researchers with the total of fatalities in confinement, and limited additional information for example the location where they lost their lives, but excluding the inmates’ personal details.

Documentation Problems

For 21 instances, primarily detainees from Gaza, investigators were unable to connect the minimal data given by government bodies to a casualty documented by rights organisations, either through testimony from freed prisoners or coverage in the press.
