Delhi Rises to Dangerous Smog After Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city encountered breathing dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" category.
Extremely High Pollution Readings
Multiple areas of the capital showed an AQI above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the safe level established by the global health authority.
In some locations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x higher than healthy limits.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the deadly haze that engulfs the capital as colder weather begins.
However recently, the current local administration appealed to the supreme court to request a modification of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically criticized by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a balance between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Court Verdict and Enforcement
Despite concerns of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities agreed to the proposal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during limited periods throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was considerable disregard of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.
Many monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed pollution peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous measurements seen during the festival in at least three years.
Regional Implications
The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles originating in neighboring India following the festivities.
Persistent Environmental Problem
Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the city have persisted as a significant problem for more than 15 years, with the situation continuing to worsen.
During Diwali, the concentration of hazardous particles in the air has been found to spike to seventy percent above the peak levels ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.
Multiple Contamination Factors
This crisis in the capital is resulting from a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in neighbouring states of farming communities.
In these regions, farmers routinely burn crop residue to clear them quickly, generating dangerous smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.
Health and Economic Toll
Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million people calling home the Delhi area is substantial, according to multiple investigations.
This pollution results in elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.
Air quality crisis is projected to be responsible for 10,000 untimely mortalities annually in the capital.
